The construction worker emoji was first approved in 2010, but in 2016 many platforms updated their lists to replace him with a male and female variant. In his original forms, he is easily identifiable by his hard hat โ safety helmet โ which is usually yellow, but appears white in its Samsung incarnation. In some versions, the hard hat has a green cross on it, reflecting the Japanese safety symbol used on construction sites. The emoji also often wears a high visibility jacket and on Google platforms, he wields a hammer. The emoji is used to refer to builders and all those who work in construction and for construction generally.
