As its official name suggests, this emoji shows a face with an open mouthed frown, very occasionally with upturned eyebrows. Itโs quite frequently used across social media and in private messaging, and is used to convey shock or astonishment of an unpleasant or unexpected nature. It almost exclusively used in negative circumstances, and is unlikely to be found in a conversation which contained good news. It might be used on hearing that a best friend has broken up with their significant other, or in a slightly exasperated way, if youโve just discovered youโre being given extra papers to work on over spring break. Confusingly, on some platforms itโs said to look like itโs yawning, so remember: context is everything!
