The woman bowing emoji was introduced in 2016 as the female variant of the person bowing emoji. It shows a young woman engaged in a deep bow called the dogeza in Japanese. The dogeza is reserved for times when someone must beg forgiveness and feels profound remorse for the actions or words. As an emoji, it is used in just the same way: to apologize and to ask for forgiveness from someone. It can also be used more generally to mean that someone is groveling. It has taken a number of additional meanings outside of Japan, including that of sleepy girl needing a nap.
