The thinking face emoji is a fairly recent (2015) addition, but an extremely useful one! It shows a highly expressive, slightly perplexed face with a finger and thumb resting beneath its mouth, meant to recreate the classic “stroking of chin” look. It’s used to show that you are thinking about something, and it can be used with a thinking bubble emoji to indicate you are attempting to come up with an idea or plan, or combine with a light bulb emoji, it shows you’ve just had a brainwave. On social media – particularly Twitter – it is also used to throw shade: frequently it will be used when replying to or quoting someone else’s statement and is meant to show that what they said was so confusing, nonsensical or ridiculous that it’s barely comprehensible!
