People the world over have a rather visceral reaction to clowns, so as you might imagine, reception to and consensus on the clown face emoji is rather split. The emoji is shown in complete clown make up, with a white face, a red ball nose, bright red painted lips, blue oval eyes and pinkish-orange tufty hair. It can be used to indicate that either the sender or the recipient is being silly and “clowning about”, or that a statement shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Also, given its close association with entertainment, it can be used for references to children’s birthday parties. And because so many people find them terrifying too: in certain particular circumstances it can be used to mean something a lot more sinister!
