A wooden box, clearly in the shape of a coffin, often strewn with flowers or with a cross engraved on its lid, the coffin emoji is instantly and almost universally recognizable. It can be used in a solemn sense, to represent funerals, bereavement, loss and sadness. More frequently still, though, it’s used much more flippantly in a humorous, ironic or sarcastic sense. It can be used with a combination of Halloween emojis to represent the celebrations and parties associated with the night, or for Mexico’s Day of the Dead. It also means “RIP”, such as the responses “RIP Humor” to a bad joke, or “RIP Romance” on hearing your favorite celebs have just split.
