Relatable to Generation X and Y who have witnessed the evolution of storage devices from casettes to CD, DVD to pen drives. An upward facing triangle and a line below it often represented the eject functionality on DVD player and other media devices. The computer later adopted the icon in their user interface.

This emoji was first introduced in Unicode 4.0 in April, 2003 which was followed by addition to Emoji 1.0 in August, 2015. Eject Button emoji was first rolled out by Microsoft on October 26, 2012 with Windows 8.0 update. Skype, Google, Twitter, Samsung added the emoji 2 years later on June 1, 2015, December 7, 2015, December 9, 2015, March 8, 2016 respectively.
