The grinning face emoji is one of the most iconic, recognizable and most widely used of the entire pantheon of pictographs, though it is in fact a more recent edition than you might think. It is characterized by its circular eyes – whereas earlier incarnations generally has smiling or oval eyes – and has an open, smiling mouth. Across all emoji platforms, the open mouth shows a row of white teeth, with some versions showing both top and bottom teeth, and individual teeth too! It’s to be used when you wish to convey happiness, joy or laughter, though not quite as much laughter as when you elect to use the ROFL or tears of joy emojis!
