The hugging face emoji is quite a new addition to the pantheon of pictographs, and one which hasn’t met with widespread admiration! This is because its meaning isn’t entirely clear without an explanation. It is a normal smiley face emoji with smiling eyes, but with a pair of outspread hands beneath the face. This is (supposedly!) meant to symbolize the giving of a hug to the recipient, but is definitely not immediately transparent! Instead, many people have dubbed it the “jazz hands” emoji, a mock reference to highly choreographed Broadway dance numbers (and popularized as a meme by the teen movie, Bring It On).
