The emoji shows a man with a single hand raised to his face in exasperation. The emoji is often used in mocking or exaggerated frustration in the face of a really ill-informed or idiotic comment. It is also used to convey extreme embarrassment or awkwardness, usually in a humorous way, such as after a particularly disastrous date or after witnessing something you wish you could unsee!
