The selfie emoji shows a disembodied, outstretched arm holding a smart phone in its hand. The arm is usually covered in a long sleeved top which come in many shades and colors, depending on the platform used. The hand is usually yellow, but some platforms will allow for skin tone modification. The hand’s thumb appears to be hovering to take a photo or – more specifically – a selfie. It can be used in a number of different contexts such as to tell someone not to forget to take photos or to say “let’s take a selfie!”. It can also be used as a tag to say: “look at this selfie we took!”.

This emoji was first introduced in Unicode 9.0 on 21st June, 2016 which was followed by addition to Emoji 3.0 in the same month and featured in September, 2014 iOS 10 update. Selfie emoji appeared on iOS 10.2, Android 7.0, EmojiOne 2.2.4 for the first time.
