Introduced in 2016, the cowboy face emoji is a classic smiling or grinning face emoji wearing a wide brimmed, instantly recognizable, “cowboy hat”. It is possibly related to the “what in -tarnation” internet meme which places cowboy hats on random objects or people, though the emoji does seem to predate the meme. It can be used for fairly transparent purposes, such as suggesting that you’re about to go horse riding or to a rodeo. Alternatively, it has been said that it looks like Indiana Jones, so it is also used to show you’re about to embark on a great adventure!
