The crying cat face emoji is distinguishable from the cat face with tears of joy emoji due to its sad, down turned mouth and because only a single tear is visible, rather than multiple ones. One some versions the cat face eyes are closed, in other they are open and represented by circular black dots. Depending on device used, the cat faces appear yellow, orange or grey, with a deep yellowy-orange being the standard. It can be used interchangeable with the standard yellow-faced crying emoji, and is used to express sorrow and sympathy. And it is, of course, more popular among cat-lovers than the general populous!
