The paperclip emoji depicts a simple piece of office supplies, but as an emoji, it is quite versatile. It’s primary and most familiar meaning is to denote an attachment on an email or other electronic message. It can be used to tell someone to expect an attachment, to send one on, or to open one as soon as possible. More recently is has also become associated with the so-called “paperclip campaign” which urges people to wear a paperclip on their clothes to identify themselves as an ally and willing to protect victims of racist or bigoted attacks. Since then, it commonly appears beside Twitter profile names, or used in messages of solidarity.
