The pen emoji is very similar to the fountain pen emoji and can even appear identical when viewed on a small screen. It depicts a standard ballpoint pen with a black or blue casing and often with gold or silver affect bands and clips. The emojis used by Facebook and Samsung are blue and appear to be spring loaded retractable pens. The pen emoji is used in conversations and messages about writing – whether specific or general – and when referring to all kinds of written communications. It is also closely associated with academia, whether as part of a child’s essential pencil case or for writing a college essay.
