Although officially called the weary cat face emoji, it has a lot more in common with the face screaming in fear emoji than the standard weary face one. On Apple, LG, Messenger and Twitter, the cat faces have large, saucer-like, hollow eyes and a drop jawed, open mouth which looks like it is emitting a scream. These particular manifestations of the emoji also show the paws clasping onto the side of the cat’s faces a la Munch’s “The Scream”. In all other versions, the weary cat emoji does in fact look a lot wearier rather than straight out frightened. It’s primarily used to express shock or surprise, though it really does depend on which device you’re using!
