The shield emoji is a fairly new addition – it was introduced in 2014 – and appears differently on different platforms and devices. On Apple iOS, Android and on Facebook Messenger, the shield is half red and half white, with a jagged, zigzag design. Other versions of the emoji are a combination of shades of blue, red, yellow or white, and with different heraldic designs. It can be used to represent any defensive action – either figurative or literal – or to symbolize medieval warfare, knights or fantasy universes. In technology, it is also a symbol employed by a variety of antivirus software for computers.
