On most platforms, the whale emoji is much more realistic looking than the spouting whale one. A number of versions – including LG and Apple’s iOS – base their emoji design on a humpback whale and pictures the characteristically ridged, white belly, large fins and small eyes. It’s used in all sorts of conversations which relate to the ocean, sea life, conservation and whales in general. It also can be used to describe something as extremely large, extremely fat or extremely hungry. Slightly more obscurely, it is sometimes used to represent the phrase “whale of a time” to describe something as being really great or fantastic.
